Kat will begin the DPhil in Philosophy in October 2023 with funding from the Faculty of Philosophy. Her thesis will explore the ethics of single-sex spaces — such as prisons, single-sex schools, and sport — and transgender inclusion, and will question whether such spaces are morally permissible. She will be supervised by Brian Earp and César Palacios-González.
Originally from London, Kat moved to New York in 2014 to attend New York University (NYU) where she wrote her honours thesis under the supervision of Samuel Scheffler and received a BA in Philosophy with Mathematics and Physics in 2018. She then began her professional career in Private Wealth Management at Morgan Stanley and later co-launched Countdown Capital, a venture capital firm investing in ethically-minded emerging industrial tech at the earliest stages in areas like energy, manufacturing, and aerospace.
In conjunction, Kat completed the Oxford MSt in Practical Ethics in September 2022. A paper based on her MSt dissertation examining the regulations that require intersex athletes to suppress their testosterone levels has since been published in the American Journal of Bioethics (linked below). She spoke on this paper at the annual Society of Applied Philosophy conference in Antwerp in June 2023.
Outside of philosophy, Kat will continue to consult and speak on impact-focused industrial tech, venture capital and business development, and developments in AI.
