Esther Braun

Esther is a medical doctor and bioethicist currently working on her DPhil in Philosophy. During her medical studies, Esther also completed a BA in Comparative Literature and History and Philosophy of Science, as well as an MA in Philosophy, at the Goethe University Frankfurt. Her research in experimental oncology for her medical doctorate was funded by the Mildred Scheel Scholarship of the German Cancer Aid. Esther was a postdoctoral research associate at the Institute for Medical Ethics and History of Medicine at Ruhr University Bochum while completing an MSt in Practical Ethics at Oxford between 2020 and 2023. She has published on bioethical topics including assisted dying, coercion in psychiatry, and psychiatric advance directives.

Her DPhil project focuses on how structural injustice can affect voluntary consent. It is supervised by Brian Earp and Guy Kahane and supported by the Clarendon Fund, a Scatcherd European Scholarship, and Wadham College. Esther is also a member of the SALUS (https://bochum-salus-project.com/) research group at Ruhr University Bochum, where she is involved in empirical and conceptual research on ethical issues in psychiatry.
