Prior to starting the MSt in Practical Ethics James studied at Brasenose College, Oxford, graduating with a BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics. During this time, he developed a particular interest in Practical Ethics. As an undergraduate, James also spent time working on the Oxford Union committee and later served as Co-President of both The Brasenose College PPE Society and The Addington Debating Society. In March 2022, James began working with fellow students and academics on the Oxford University Free Speech Forum, the aspiration of which was to construct a framework of guidelines in order to facilitate free discussion during events and debates held at the university. James was a panellist in one of the subsequent ‘Debating the Difficult’ events which implemented the framework, during which he spoke alongside Lord Falconer, Baroness Finlay, and Yuan Yi Zhu, on the ethics of assisted dying. He has also written about philosophy and current affairs for various journalistic publications, including The Spectator and The Cherwell.
James is especially interested in the field of bioethics, a focus which he researched a great deal during his undergraduate degree. In particular, he is keen to further his studies relating to the interaction between the ethical questions surrounding genetic modification and those related to the free will debate. James is looking to continue his studies into a PhD.
