About the essay collection

The collection brings together nineteen eminent philosophers from the UK, US and Europe to reflect on the role of philosophy in politics, policymaking and public life. At a time when the contribution of philosophy to public life is often overlooked, these essays consider, from a range of perspectives, how disciplined philosophical thinking can illuminate the principles underpinning social and economic models, and how it can support policy development.

From debates about AI to questions of inequality and justice, philosophical thinking has never been more relevant. Yet it’s often missing from how we shape policy and public debate.

Our new collection, “The point is to change it”: Essays on philosophy in public life, asks how philosophical insight can inform research, policy, and public understanding.

Twenty-one contributors from across the UK, US, and Europe explore philosophy’s potential, share first-hand reflections on engaging beyond academia, and offer interventions on urgent issues, including climate change and the morality of prisons and healthcare.

Together, the essays make a case for a richer, more reflective public discourse and highlight why philosophy should matter more, not just in theory, but in practice.
